Acute Esophageal Necrosis: “Black Esophagus”
Acute esophageal necrosis (AEN) is an uncommon event. We report a case of an 84-year-old female with a giant paraesophageal hernia who presented with coffee ground emesis and on esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) demonstrated findings consistent with acute esophageal necrosis and a giant paraesophageal hernia with normal-appearing gastric mucosa. She was managed conservatively with bowel rest, pa...

Acute gastrointestinal necrosis (AGN) can result from multitude of local or systemic factors. The distribution of necrosis is likely to depend on the site of the insult and/or the vascular supply of the affected bowel. A rare syndrome of “Acute esophageal necrosis” (AEN) or “Black esophagus” (BEs) has been described earlier referring to black discoloration of esophageal mucosa seen on endoscopi...

Acute esophagic necrosis or black esophagus is an uncommon clinical entity that owes its name to the endoscopic view of the necrotic esophageal mucosa. It is always related with a critical medical condition and usually has an ischemic etiology. We report the first case of acute esophageal necrosis after a spinal anesthetic for partial hip joint arthroplasty. We discuss the underlying pathophysi...
